Why we prefer Xeomin over Botox & Dysport

We hope you had a wonderful time with your family during Christmas, and we wish you a very happy New Year!

So last time we talked a little about the history of Botox. In this letter, we will be dicussing the differences between the three big brands usually used to get rid of wrinkles.

Aside from each reaching the market with about 10 years between each product (depending what country your in). All of the household brands (Botox, Dysport and Xeomin) are botulinum toxins type A and after injection into muscles cause temporary paralysis lasting 3 or more months depending on the dose and muscle treated. In regards to product selections, we are more inclined to choosing Xeomin. You may ask why? Well the first premise of all healthcare is “first do no harm”. So when a cleaner, more pure product equivalent in efficacy becomes available, it’s a no brainer! As with any type of evolution, things improve with time! I don’t drive the same car I did in the 80’s as I want to experience the benefits and improvements that come with newer technology.

When the botulinum toxin complex ferments, it is made up of two parts: an active toxin part that causes the paralysis and the surplus inactive protein part that surrounds it. The toxin needs all those surrounding proteins to protect it from acid degradation in highly acidic environments, for example in the stomach of a human, so it can survive long enough to infect the host with botulism. If you remember from our previous blog, that is how botulinum toxin was first discovered. But we want to stay away from eating the stuff and we sure do not want botulism, instead we want the aesthetic effects when injecting it to relax muscles. Therefore, the protein part surrounding the toxin is unnecessary for our objective. We don’t actually want or need the second part. Initially when Botox and Dysport came out it was thought these proteins carried the toxin around the muscle but we later learnt that to be false. The 2 parts separate in non acidic environments like when the saline is added to the vial and when injected into the tissues. So essentially they are contaminants, immune irritants even!

That is the beauty of hindsight. We look at what we had and find ways to make things better. We moved from CFC’s to CFC free, leaded to unleaded petrol, pesticides to organic, things are always moving forward, health and medicine is no different. So we choose Xeomin for our wrinkle treatments because I have a choice. A healthier cleaner choice!

Kind regards,
